John Zilles

Just a bit about me.

When you are raised by a single teenage/hippie mother in a small redneck town you get your ass kicked… often.  In order to survive, you learn to shut up and blend in.  Who knew that all of that blending in would give me the best skill a non-fiction filmmaker needs: the ability to listen and observe.

I use my camera not only to capture the beauty of life as it happens, but also to sketch and interpret truth and authenticity.  I find great joy in photographing those who are not accustomed to attention, those who are too busy being themselves to be concerned about their self image.

Somewhere along the line I came across this beautiful phrase… “most people live on the world, not in it.”  I make films about people who live in the world.  Films that celebrate humanity.  Films that inspire and remind us of the best in ourselves.
